MS Word 2010: Permanently Delete unused Custom Styles

Although you can add styles to a template from a document that is attached to it.  You cannot do the reverse.  You must open the template and delete the styles from there to keep the unwanted styles from appearing in new documents based on it.

To  find out what template  is attached to your document, first add the Developer tab to your ribbon
  • Office button > Word options > Show developer tab on ribbon.
Then go to Developer tab >  Templates group. The top input will show the name and, if not notmal.dotm, the full path of the attached template.
To find normal.dotm, go to
  • Office button > Open > (Trusted) Templates (in the "places bar" on the left of the dialog).  Double click the normal.dotm to open it.
